Hunter van Emmerik
“Out of high school, I was recruited to play at Humboldt State from Ferndale High School. I used my red shirt year there and attended a full year of school and football there. I went from 220 lbs to about 255 thanks to Drew Petersen’s amazing weight program there. I was awarded scout player of the year there, but felt that I was capable of playing at the next level up, which would be Division 1 football. I transferred to College of the Redwoods and actually played a year of basketball that first year at CR, and then football the second year I was there. During basketball season I knew that I was going to go back to football the following year so I spent the season training at health sport in my off time. The basketball workouts helped me with my quickness while the weights at HealthSPORT helped me with my strength. After that first year of basketball I was going to transfer to play at Butte college, but due to CCCAA rules, I wasn’t able to transfer schools due to the fact that I played sports. Coach Frank Borba, the head coach at College of the Redwoods, heard about this and called me shortly after and recruited me to play for his team. I had a great experience playing for him and his coaching staff as they set me on the right path to get recruited. During this season I would lift and workout with the team at CR as well as my weight lifting program which I based off of what I learned from Drew Petersen at HSU at Health Sport. I gained about 10 more pounds throughout the season and remained stable around 265. As soon as the season ended, I began a more intense off season workout regimen which included heavy lifting and frequent conditioning through drills or running the hills and Rohnert park. I spent many hours training in my off seasons with my friend and lifting partner Zach Hugh, a Fortuna local who is currently playing for Santa Rosa JC. It’s not easy to find someone who has as hard of a drive as me to get better, and Zach definitely does. I see big things in his future as well if he continues his work ethic. I also want to give a HUGE shout out and thanks to Jay Register who works at HealthSPORT as a personal trainer. He has helped me and Zach immensely in the offseason by teaching us new drills and helping us with footwork, speed, technique, and strength. He is a former Division 1 college player and dedicated much of his free time to helping me and Zach train and we are very thankful to have a friend/coach like him. I grew to a current 281 lbs these past several months training at HealthSPORT. I was recruited and signed to play for the University of Wyoming, a division-1 school who competes in the Mountain West Conference on a full scholarship as a 3-tech, or defensive tackle. I am forever grateful for Zach and Jay for their dedication and hard work we all put in to help me achieve this goal. I will continue to keep training with Jay until I leave for Wyoming to train with the team in the Summer, and hopefully Zach as well if he gets a chance to come home anytime soon! I also want to thank HealthSPORTfor providing me with all the tools I needed to improve my strength and skills in football! I will be doing mostly all of my training at the University of Wyoming now in the near future, but if I get a chance when i’m home, it wouldn’t hurt to get a little extra workout in at HealthSPORT!”
