Healthy Fast Food Choices

1) Revise Your Order

One of the options you have when placing an order at a fast food restaurant is to change things up a bit. For example, those delicious, creamy condiments they spread on the hamburger buns can add 94 calories per teaspoon, or more! They can also be high in sodium. Asking for no spread on the buns is certainly a healthier choice.

If you’re looking to cut down on carbs, ask to have them replace the buns with lettuce. Also, instead of ordering large fries and a large coke, ask for no fries and a large unsweetened iced tea with lemon. Now you’ve just created a much healthier meal for yourself.

2) Order From the Healthy Menu

Over the years, fast food restaurants have increasingly come under fire for offering food that tastes great but has contributed significantly to major health problems like obesity and type 2 diabetes. To show their concern and willingness to support healthier food options, many have created a healthy menu.

Here are a few healthy fast food choices from some of the top fast food restaurants in the country:

MacDonald’s
Salads made with chicken, vegetables, and fruit.

Wendy’s
Chicken salads and chicken wraps.

Subway
Salad with chicken breast and vegetables. Also, whole grain bread for their sandwiches.

In Eureka, Humboldt Soup Company offers fresh soups prepared daily plus healthy sandwich and salad options – all using clean, local, non GMO ingredients whenever possible.

3) Dine In Vs. Drive Thru

Have you ever noticed restaurants which are considered ‘fine dining’ never have a drive-thru? Why? Because it takes time to prepare healthy, quality meals. Locally, places like Japhy’s Soup and Noodles, Eureka Natural Foods, and Los Bagels offer food options that lean more towards fast food than fine dining, and typically offer healthier choices. Take the time to dine in and enjoy a healthier meal.
